WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the manufacturer named below, today announced voluntary recalls of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Starbucks Barista Aroma(tm) Stainless Steel 8-Cup Coffee Brewers
Units: About 73,000

Distributor: Starbucks Coffee Company, of Seattle, Wash.

Hazard: The coffee brewer has defective electrical wiring that can result in overheating, smoking, burning and melting, posing a possible fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Starbucks has received 23 reports of melting in the plastic housing of the brewers. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall includes the Starbucks Barista Aroma 8-Cup Coffee Brewer only. “Starbucks Barista Aroma” is embossed on the front of the brewer and the brewer has silver control panel buttons and a chrome finish. The Starbucks Barista Grande 12-Cup Coffee Brewer and Starbucks Barista Solo Coffee Brewers are not included in this recall.

Sold at: Starbucks company-owned and operated stores nationwide between March 2005 and September 2006 for about $100.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled coffee brewers immediately and contact Starbucks for a full refund. Consumers will receive a postage-paid package along with instructions on how to return their brewer. Starbucks is also offering a coupon (valid through 1/31/07) for a free pound of coffee as an incentive to return the recalled machine.

  1. We would like to know how to replace the plastic bail or the water receptical for a 12 cup coffee maker brewer. Starbucks Barista Aroma Grande. It was purchased about Dec 2004. The handle has deteriorated and wont stay in the holes of the water container.

    We would appreciate knowing the cost and how to aquire a new piece.

    Try calling (800) 453-1047 and see how Starbucks is now handling this unit. The recall was posted over two years ago,so I’m not sure what they’ll do. Please come back and let us know what happens – you’ll be helping the next coffee drinker who stops by.

I went ahead and called Starbucks Warrenty line (number in other emails) as I’m having the problem of the coffee spilling out before it goes into the carafe, while it’s brewing (sounds like the others needing a new washer, spring, and button). They were quite helpful and are sending me an entire new top for my carafe (cost $10.75). I am very pleased as I love this machine.

    FYI – They are very limited on parts now due to the age of the machine.

    I did inquire as to the recall (but was not wanting to give mine up). They informed me that the recall is only for the black units and not the stainless steel.

  21. I am on my 3rd Aroma Grande 12 cup machine from Starbucks, the first two had various problems & over the years I have managed to keep one machine working with the various parts from the previous two.

    Yet again I find myself in need of a whole new top for the carafe, unlike most I seem to read here & on other sites my problems have been the main unit itself, that is to say with the previous two units, both of which were gifts & sounable to return for new when problems arose.

    Trust me I tried to return them or have repairs carried out on them both but without a receipt it was too much of a chore whilst dealing with Starbucks store, website & their HQ, all this despite having UPC codes, paperwork etc..

    It is as if Starbucks loves to sell items as gifts but hates to do anything about those gifts if the ‘giver’ does not include the reciept (& who gives reciepts with gifts such as coffee makers from a well know international store).

    Anyways, I now find myself in need of the entire top (screw in lid) for the carafe.

    Something just goes drasticly wrong with this lids, the push down button that allows you to pour the liquid bliss from the carafe has a nasty habit of snapping off inside the cap.

    Having two ‘spares’ in the past has helped, now my third & final one has bit the dust & for the life of me I cannot find a replacement for the entire top piece. 🙁

    All other parts, the spring, the “Plunger” & rubber grommet that holds everything together are easily repaired & / or replaced but once that ‘button / lever’ goes you are in deep doo-doo.

    There is just no way to get inside the unit to ‘glue / epoxy’ the piece back & make it work.
    I have tried to do it “Blind”, adding epoxy resin the first attempt, this just left me with a lever that was stuck fast in the upright position, the second attemp was a dab of ‘super glue’… this too didn’t find the spot & has rendered the whole lid 100% useless.

    So now I can still brew coffee, but when it comes to the ‘pour’ I have to unscrew the lid100% to remove it, pour my coffee & then replace the lid, each time letting more & more cool / cold air in.

    No longer can I enkoy the hot fresh coffee several hours later as before, I have to use it all (that which is brewed) within an hour else I have tepid rank coffee & that just is not the way to enjoy Blue Mountain or a nice Asian / Pacific coffee.

    If anybody might have a spare lid or know where to purchase one as Starbucks has been about as much help to me as glass slippers are to a rugby player mid-scrum.

    Well, I’d love you for ever & offer to have your babies or other such nonsense.

  27. We too have the starbucks barista aroma grande 12 cup carafe coffee pot. Loved how the water goes in a separate container attachment, makes it easy and simple……

    However, a piece broke on the inside of the lid and a few days later the spring in the top broke.

    This bartista was rather expensive…what good is the simplicity if you can not use the unit…BOO to my bartista aroma grande.

    We once had the 10 cup had problems, exchanged it….asked it there were any returns on the product…Their words were NO….All I see are complaints, recalls and returns….again BOO to the bartisa aroma!!!!

  29. I phoned Starbucks a few weeks ago in regards to a replacement lid for our Aroma Grande 12 cup. It has been discontinued and replacement parts are no longer available. Last time we’ll buy a coffee maker from Starbucks.

  32. Just called Starbucks to purchase a new lid for the 12cup Barista Aroma Grande carafe. No Luck, they have no more. Reason is that they stopped selling the machine 3.5 years ago, warranty is two (2) years from purchase. Once last warranty expired, they stopped ordering new repair parts.
    1. Remove the spring loaded valve on the bottom of the basket holder and make coffee into an open carafe -or-
    2. Buy a new machine

  35. Brent, It sounds like you need to decalcify your machine. Their are cleaners that you can use that you add to your water tank and run throuh a cycle. Or you can use plain vinegar, add one cup of vinegar to full tank of water and brew. Make sure you brew a couple of cycles after of just water or your coffee wont taste right. Hope this helps.

    Boo-hoo that so many people have trouble with the lid of the carafe for their Barista Aroma Grande 12 cup coffee maker. The “plate” that opens the lid when you push the pour lever on the lid has broken apart on mine. You would think with this many requests, Starbucks would order a run of 500 or so of these lids and make a bundle selling replacements. 🙂

  42. Hey I have a nice old Starbucks 12 cup Barista Aroma Grande. It just gave out after about 8 or so years. As for the lid anyone who wants it can have it, same with all the parts from it. As for the wiring and the recall mine melted and burnt away just like in the 8 cup. It just took a little longer. I called Starbucks, they don’t care. I’ll call the cpsc and see what they say. As for Paula Sommer, have someone look inside your machine see if the wire melted, that is what occurred with mine. Okay So again anyone wanting my carafe, lid or any other parts let me know. As for cold coffee, after you brew it you need to pull the carafe out off the machine or the open top allows the coffee to get cold. As for the people who kept the 8 cups that had been recalled YOUR NUTS, return those pieces of junk. The wiring is bad and can be a FIRE hazard. Okay I am headed to Wal Mart to buy another piece of whatever coffee pot, oh or maybe Costco.

  45. Ack! This is the model we purchased at a Canadian Starbucks TWO years ago…after the recall!! I was looking for the manual online to use it for the first time since purchase and found this 🙁

  46. We purchased the 8 cup coffee maker above awhile ago, not aware of the recall. Anyway the coffee maker will brew coffee, but will stop without using all of the water. The button needs to be pushed anywhere from 3-7 times before all the water is put through. Can you advise if this is a electrical issue or is there another issue and how can it be repaired.
