From what you have stated, I would say you have a bad motor or a bad belt. Take the belt off and see if there are pieces out of it [That usally makes it "thump"]. If no chunks are missing see if there are burn spots on it. If it looks ok you probaly have a bad start winding on the motor.

I've got a Kenmore 98702 stacked washer/dryer that we got 6+ years ago and the drum started thumping during the spin cycle so I turned it off. I turned it back on and I could hear the motor trying to turn, but it didn't turn, then smoke started coming out of the back. It had an electric smell.

I took off the front panel, the belt looks fine and I was able to turn it manually. When I plugged it in and turned it on, the belt seemed to contract and the motor made noise like it was trying to spin, but didn't. After a few seconds I smelled the burning again, so turned it off and unplugged it.

Any ideas? Is this something I would be able to fix? I'm somewhat handy, but haven't ever done anything with washer/dryers.

Thanks!
