It could also be if you haven't rinsed dishes properly before putting them into the machine, for example bowls that have had milk in, this can produce a sour-ish smell. buy some dishwasher cleaner and give it a rinse with this on empty

Have you noticed your sink draining slower latey?  How long has D/W been installed?  If it is a newer installlation they may not have installed drain hose correctly. New D/W's need to have what they call a "High Loop" in the drain hose.
