Recall: Big Lots Recalls Portable Ceramic Space Heaters Due to Fire, Electric Shock Hazard

Name of Product: Portable Space Heater and Portable Oscillating Space Heater

Units: About 70,500

Importer: Big Lots, of Columbus, Ohio

Hazard: The heaters can overheat and melt, posing a fire or electric shock hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Big Lots has received four reports of the product overheating and melting. There are no reports of injury, fire or property damage.

Description: This recall is of two models of 1500 watt Climate Keeper ceramic heaters. Both models have a fan, two dials on top, a wire mesh panel in front and the name “Climate Keeper” and a label on the bottom with the model number and ETL 3130679. Model #FH107A has grey plastic housing. Model #PTC-902T is an oscillating heater with silver-grey plastic housing, a molded handle on top of the heater and a small extra button between the two dials which controls the oscillation.

Sold exclusively at: Big Lots stores nationwide from September 2010 through March 2012 for about $20 for Model #FH107A and $25 for Model #PTC-902T.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled product immediately and return it to a Big Lots store for a full refund.

Recall: Select Brands Kitchen Selectives Blender Due to Laceration Hazard

Manufacturer: Select Brands, of Lenexa, Kan.

Hazard: While in operation, the plastic pitcher can separate from the blade assembly, leaving the blade assembly in the base and exposing the rotating blades. This poses a laceration hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Select Brands has received no reports of incidents or injuries involving Kitchen Selectives® 6-speed blenders.

Description: The recalled products are Kitchen Selectives® 6-Speed Blenders, model BL-15. The model number is located on the bottom of the base. The blender consists of a six-inch tall, white electrical base with five, white speed-selector buttons labeled 1 through 5, one gray button labeled “Pulse/Off” and the logo “Kitchen Selectives®” in black letters on the front; a clear plastic pitcher with a handle with U.S. and metric volume measurement markings; a white plastic lid with a removable clear plastic lid stopper; and a white plastic blade assembly with two angled, stainless steel blades.

Sold at: Midwest retail stores Pamida and Sutherlands from June 2009 to April 2012 for about $20.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the blenders and return them to the retailer where purchased to receive a full refund.

Recall: Black & Decker Coffeemakers by Applica Consumer Products Due to Injury Hazard

Name of Product: Black & Decker® Spacemaker™ 12-Cup Programmable Under-the-Cabinet Coffeemakers

Units: About 159,000

Distributor: Applica Consumer Products Inc. of Miramar, Fla.

Hazard: The coffee pot handle can break, causing cuts and burns to the consumer.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 1,276 reports of handles breaking, including 68 reports of burns and/or cuts.

Description: This recall involves Black & Decker® brand 12-cup coffeemakers designed to mount under a cabinet. Available in either white or black models, the words “BLACK & DECKER® SPACEMAKER™” are printed in the top right-hand corner. The coffeemakers have a digital time display in the top left corner and five round buttons above the water reservoir. The 12-cup coffee pots are glass with a molded handle the same color as the machine and a silver metallic bracket running around the glass near the bottom.

The recall includes model numbers SDC740, SDC740B, SDC740BR, SDC740C, SDC740DIS, SDC740R, SDC750, SDC750C and SDC750DIS. The model number is printed on the underside of the coffeemaker, directly below the water reservoir.

Sold at: Major retailers nationwide from July 2008 through May 2012 for about $50-80.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the coffeemakers and contact Applica to exchange their coffee pot for a free replacement.
