Considering Vita-Mix

May 27, 2008 By NightOwl

I’ve always thought of Vita-Mix blenders as a health food, hippy blender, one that has been replaced by juicers. Nevertheless, in the back of my mind I can ‘t help wondering if it is the answer to my ice crushing, smoothie making needs.  Sylvia Carter seems to feel the same way, but she finally gave in and purchased one.

At some point in my distant past, I had acquired a Vita-Mix, lured by devotees who swore by it. It could grind grain! Make soup! Make ice cream! It could grind the fiber, stems, seeds and skins of vegetables to a puree, unlike a blender, a processor or most juicers. You waste less, since the machine lets you use whole foods.

Reader, I never removed my Vita-Mix from the box, so intimidated was I by the large, powerful machine. My cat is fond of the original packing box as a scratching post.

Then Vita-Mix, a family-owned company in suburban Cleveland, sent me notice that they had a new version, the 5200 model, with a shatterproof container that is BPA-free and a more efficient motor. (BPA is the substance that leaches out of common household plastic containers and may be harmful.) The improved model came in red, a color I can’t resist when it comes to kitchen appliances or shoes.

Vita-Mix sent a pro, Wendy Manfredi, to put the monster through its paces. First, she dumped some ordinary brown rice into the Vita-Mix container and in a couple of minutes, voila! We had fine, evenly ground rice flour. You could use the flour to make rice noodles, if you felt ambitious, or you could use it to bread foods, or just as a soup thickener.

The machine operates at a velocity so fast it can create heat, and it sounded like an airplane taking off. At first, I backed across the kitchen. Then, I got used to it.

Next, Manfredi made tortilla soup. We didn’t even peel the carrot that went into it. No seeding the tomato, either. She made a smoothie, strawberry stems and all.

For ice cream, she tossed frozen peaches, soy milk and a little honey into the container. When the mixture forms mounds, she cautioned, it is done; blending too long will cause melting.

The Vita-Mix comes with a 64 ounce container which has its pros and cons- it holds almost all you could want to make, but is so large it is difficult to store.  A smaller 32 ounce jar is available for purchase separately.  Vita-Mix is not sold in stores but can be purchased online at vitamix.com. The 5200 model begins at $449.

Great Coffeemakers for a Great Cup of Coffee

May 6, 2008 By NightOwl

It’s been said before, but for many people the day just doesn’t really start until they’ve had that first cup of coffee. Not only that, but now coffee drinkers have myriad choices of beans and roasting styles. Those specially selected beans need to be brewed just right. Be sure to find a coffee maker that suits your particular needs. Here are a few choices to consider:

Hamilton Beach BrewStation Deluxe prepares up to twelve cups of coffee in an internal chamber and then dispenses them on demand into your cup. This model also makes iced tea. Suggested retail is $80

Mr. Coffee’s Grind & Brew has a built-in grinder that lets you vary the amount of beans used in each batch. The chamber is removable and dishwasher safe. Suggested retail is $85.

The Philips Senseo Supreme prepares just one or two cups at a time, but tops each one with a cappuccino like froth. It had an adjustable spout to accommodate tall or short mugs. Suggested retail is $140.

Braun’s Impressions Design Collection 10 Cup Coffeemaker is a classic type basic coffeemaker. GoodHousekeeping Magazine gave it’s coffee top ratings. It has a thermal carafe to keep the coffee hot even at the table. Suggested retail is $90.

A more affordable version of the Braun coffeemaker is JCPenny’s Cooks 12-cup Coffeemaker with a suggested retail of $40.

Looking for some tips for a great cup of coffee?

Use the recommended amount of coffee. Generally that is two tablespoons per cup.
Use disposable paper filters. They do a better job of filtering out grounds than reusable ones.
    Start with fresh cool water.
Clean your coffeemaker regularly following the manufacturers guidelines.

Fisher & Paykel is Moving to Mexico

May 2, 2008 By NightOwl

Fisher & Paykel, the New Zealand appliance manufacturer well known for it’s dishwasher drawers and washing machines is consolidating it’s manufacturing and moving to Reynosa, Mexico, just south of the U.S. border.

The range and DishDrawer factory in Dunedin, New Zealand, the refrigeration plant in Brisbane, Australia and the DCS manufacturing plant in Huntington Beach will be relocated to the new facility in the next 12-18 months. The DCS move is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and individual manufacturing lines will be shifted separately to reduce the impact on warehouse inventory. The U.S. operation will continue to employ sales and marketing, customer services, head office and an engineering staff of around 340 employees. The financial benefit of the DCS move is expected to be $6.6 million per year with a one off cost of $7 million, both at pre-tax level.

“This expansion is designed to streamline our manufacturing costs, and bring increased consistency and efficiency to the company’s production process in the U.S. market, “ said Mike Goadby, North American President for Fisher & Paykel Appliances. “It’s an emotional time for all of us, but this move will make us more competitive in the U.S. and strengthen our distribution efforts through making them more efficient.”

With the Reynosa acquisition and the new North American DishDrawer line announced last year, the financial benefits of the new strategy are expected to be around $50 million per year, at a one off cost of approximately $100 million. The cost of the move will be offset by the sale of surplus property in Australia and New Zealand, which could total approximately $100 million.

With the Remington ShortCut Clipper, Men can Cut Their Own Hair

April 19, 2008 By NightOwl

The last man I know who tried to cut his own hair, had his family laughing at his expense for weeks.  Luckily a quick visit to a stylist saved him from having to face the world with the botched look.  I’m wondering if he’d like to try this new clipper from Remington which claims it is easy to use, cuts evenly every time, and is “virtually impossible to mess up.”

The innovative curved blade technology and revolutionary ‘brush shaped’ design makes cutting your hair as easy as brushing it. The ShortCut Clipper’s extra wide curved blades cut back and forth to the shape of your head for an even cut in less passes than traditional straight clippers. The adjustable comb guide offers 5 length settings, cutting from 1/8″ to 1/2″ and the balding comb attachment gives the closest cut possible from an electric hair clipper. The ShortCut Clipper delivers the popular short to ultra-short hairstyle easily, evenly and error-free

Additional features of the ShortCut Clipper include self-sharpening blades that never need replacing and a pop-up trimmer to detail around the ears and neckline. The 40-minute run time and cordless capability are also standout features that add to the simplicity of the clipper and make it an ideal travel companion.

The ShortCut Clipper is available at retailers nationwide and on www.remingtonshortcut.com. Two models are available for a recommended price of $29.99 for the standard version or $39.99 for the high-end model in chrome.

Phil Davis is the Managing Member of iCubed International, the company that makes the smallest microwave ever built. “I was looking for a way to do a hot towel treatment before my shave,”
said Davis, “I figured the only way I could do that was to have a microwave in the bathroom. I went and got a tape measure, and it went from there.”
From there, it became what it is today: the world’s smallest patented,
personal-sized, portable microwave that is perfect for a number of uses: in
the bathroom to heat towels, paraffin waxes, lotions and more. In the
bedroom it can heat gel packs to soothe aches and pains, or heat that
morning coffee or tea without a trip downstairs. It’s perfect for any place
where space is at a premium: work or home office; home gym; family room;
nursery; wet bar; dorm room; work bench; pool house. It features a built-in
carry handle that makes it perfect for tailgate parties and picnics. It has
all the electronic controls and safety features you would expect, and it

super-energy-efficient, measures just 10″ x 10.5″ x 12″ and weighs only 12
lbs. The iWave Cube input is 600 Watts.
