The solder on all of the pins on the circuit boards is full of lead and mercury. But there is also gold and other valuable metals so they can be reclaimed from scrap. I read an article in National Geographic about boatloads of monitors going to Africa and China to be smashed, burned and all the metals rescued. Looked like nasty work. In Europe the government forces manufacturers to take back old computer scrap.

Darla,

Here in California, Goodwill will take old electronics at there donation centers. They don't resell them, I think they recycle them or pass them to a safe disposal system. I think I heard that there is mercury in old computers and/or monitors. Has anyone else heard of that?

Hi, I'm finally getting a new monitor for my computer and I don't know what to do with my 5 year old (maybe more) monitor. I've heard that I shouldn't put it out with my trash, so what do I do with it? I tried donating it, no one wants it! Thanks.
