Yes, it has a knob-key that you have to turn to start unit. The part number for an older key is "776594". Find a local appliance parts or service house, they should be able to get one, they still are aviliable.

I recently purchased a new home. Installed under the kitchen counter is a kitchenaid trash compactor. Its definitely a few decades old. There is no model number on it, I checked the front, opened the drawers, checked the front frame, etc, alas, no model number.

I can't get the device started. It might be functioning. It has two switches, one of which is a flip switch to turn on the fan for the 'charcoal filter', which works. The only other control is on the left side, it looks like a tan button, but it has a slot for a key to be slid in, or something along those lines (maybe a rotating switch can be slotted in?). The previous owners are no help on the matter. There is no manual.

It looks similar to this compactor:

http://kitchen.manualsonline.c.....3b97.pjpeg

Except that it is white and has only the two controls I described, and in the picture, the spot for the key looks 'normal', but on mine it really looks like a tan button, with a more rounded 'key slot'.

I've contacted kitchen aid, but no help so far. I assume that the key for these things can't be all that special, right? I mean, there must be a generic key that will fit most models, no? Any adivce? Should I just jam a stick into there to get it to work, or is there a cheap sort of key that anyone knows about that could work here?
