I just heard that Lowes will take back a washer (and dryer?) that they can't repair.  I think you have to let them try to fix it four times and then they'll take it back and give you a new one.

*****************************

Not in each case.

Most times an appliance will be exchanged after three repair attempts (by an authorized servicer) failed to resolve problems for the customer. The RETAILER takes responsibility for this if it occurs within the *Store Return Policy* period (varies 30 to 90 days).

After the store return period expires–a consumer may contact the manufacturer and try to get the customer service representative (CSR) supervisor to authorize an exchange by the retailer. In this case–the retailer is “credited” by the manufacturer for the appliance that is returned and “field scrapped”.

Some retailers will claim that they have a return policy that varies from a period of 30 to 90 days * BUT * the sales receipt clearly states that the store “reserves the right to deny / decline a returned item”.

A little slick–so check the receipt carefully when purchasing big ticket items at your favorite big box retailer.

Help! I am heading out the door later today to shop for a new washer and dryer. I want to stay in the $450 and below range for each. I am confused with all of the different brands, performance, etc. Any help on choosing? I want dependability above all else!

I'd avoid Maytag.  They are not the machines they used to be.  Not made like they were in the good ol' days.

Did  you see all the comments here about the Kenmore Oasis?  OMG – so many problems.
