Recall: Black & Decker Coffeemakers by Applica Consumer Products Due to Injury Hazard

Name of Product: Black & Decker® Spacemaker™ 12-Cup Programmable Under-the-Cabinet Coffeemakers

Units: About 159,000

Distributor: Applica Consumer Products Inc. of Miramar, Fla.

Hazard: The coffee pot handle can break, causing cuts and burns to the consumer.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 1,276 reports of handles breaking, including 68 reports of burns and/or cuts.

Description: This recall involves Black & Decker® brand 12-cup coffeemakers designed to mount under a cabinet. Available in either white or black models, the words “BLACK & DECKER® SPACEMAKER™” are printed in the top right-hand corner. The coffeemakers have a digital time display in the top left corner and five round buttons above the water reservoir. The 12-cup coffee pots are glass with a molded handle the same color as the machine and a silver metallic bracket running around the glass near the bottom.

The recall includes model numbers SDC740, SDC740B, SDC740BR, SDC740C, SDC740DIS, SDC740R, SDC750, SDC750C and SDC750DIS. The model number is printed on the underside of the coffeemaker, directly below the water reservoir.

Sold at: Major retailers nationwide from July 2008 through May 2012 for about $50-80.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the coffeemakers and contact Applica to exchange their coffee pot for a free replacement.

    We were notified by e-mail of the above recall. They required us to send back the old pot before they would send the new one. It took over two weeks before we received the new pot. Guess what? I want our old pot back because the new one leaks out beneath the pouring spout where the glass and the plastic come together. It’s like a dribble glass. We’ve made cups at a time coffee for all this time and now it looks as if we’re going to have to do it again for the next two weeks.

  2. I bought a Black and Decker Spacemaker under the cabinet coffeemaker for myself and 1 for my daughter. I was totally shocked when the handle broke and I almost had a hot pot of coffee on me. My husband wanted to glue the handle, I told him no so he threw the pot out. I ordered one through I heard nothing so I emailed them twice and called once. The lady in Beechwood Ohio was very nice and told me they were on back order and she would send me one as soon as they came in. The price is $29.90!!!! Today 10/29/12 I had an email from Applica Consumer Affairs that the carafes had been recalled, I wonder why the recall notices never got to the consumer until now???? I intend to use my coffeemaker as soon as I get a new carafe and hope it doesn’t happen again. I have told my daughter not to use hers until she gets a new carafe. I’m also wondering if we have to pay the $29.90 for the carafe. I also wonder if I can get a new one since the old one was thrown away. I didn’t know we had to keep it. If I would have known there was a recall I would have kept the carafe.
