My stove is lighting on its own and I believe its been heating to different temperature than selected but its not listed under this recall. Its a Kenmore 790.96129409

Hi. I have a kenmore flat top stove that is not under recall but is three years old. The burner just came on buy it’s self and my wife almost got burned. SEARS won’t do anything. I reported this problem to U. S. Consumer Product Saftey Comission. They said they can’t do anything either till enough are complained about. I can’t use my stove and can’t afford to buy one. I want to see about getting a class action lawsuit against Sears. Please e-mail me at kamm7288@aol.com. Hopefully if we get enough people we can get something done. Thanks

  3. Ingrid Wheeler says:

I have a Kenmore Elite smoothtop range model # 790.99019102. Had a problem with the right front burner not turning off and staying on high. Had it fixed at our expense ($350) in July ’09 and then received the recall notice in August ’09. Spent hours on the phone getting the runaround from Sears but finally they agreed to re-imburse me for the repairs. Now, a few days ago the same burner wouldn’t turn off again. Again had to turn it off at the circuit breaker and not use it. Contacted Sears and spent over an hour on the phone to be told that the warranty on the recalled part was 90 days so I would have to have it repaired at my own expense. NO WAY am I doing that! Obviously the first repair was not a fix and the stove was still a fire hazard. I can’t believe they can get away with this! I would not trust another repair to be safe now. We went out and bought another stove yesterday, not Sears or Frigidaire! We’ve bought most of our appliances, vacuums, tires, etc. at Sears over more than 40 years but won’t be buying anything from them ever again!

  4. Leesa Hart says:

Just found out my stove is part of the recall. I have a Kenmore Elite Model#79099012101 Serial#VF24204762. I am not happy with Sears customer service. I had to pay for a repair back in 2006, had to have the Relay Board replaced stove stopped working not long after purchase. My question that no one can seem to answer on the phone is what part is being replaced for the recall.
I want to know if it is the relay board again. Now my right front burner stays on in the OFF position. Burner gets hotter and hotter once turned off. After reading all these comments I am a bit nervous about keeping it pluged in and still using it until the repair is made. After 15 min of trying to get the burner to go off I finally flipped the breaker to get it off.
I get alot of F5 errors also when turing a burner on.
I will not be buying appliances from Sears anymore. Have been for years now but they are on my do not list for now on. I will also pass the word to family & friends not to buy from them.
    Signed a very unhappy customer

  5. Go Public says:

    Hello,

I work for a large news media organization in Canada.

We are working on a story about faulty Kenmore electric stoves that do not fall under the 2009 voluntary recall, but are experiencing the same problems — ie — the element doesn’t switch off, or it spontaneously switches on, or it heats to a different temperature than specified by the user.

If you have a Kenmore or Frigidaire stove with one or some of these problems, and it is NOT included the recall, please contact us directly at gopublic@cbc.ca. Include your name and phone number so we can get a hold of you.

    Thanks in advance.

We won!!!! Yay CBC Go Public….

The following is off the Sears Canada website:

    Product safety information
Sears Canada considers product safety a serious matter and strives to ensure that our customers receive safe, quality merchandise every time they shop with us.
April 2011 – Certain Frigidaire® and Kenmore Freestanding Electric Ranges
This information is being posted as additional information to the two notices in this section of sears.ca (the first dated August 2009 and the second dated October 2010) regarding certain Frigidaire and Kenmore ranges sold at Sears Canada.

Since Sears Canada became aware through its supplier of the possibility for some of its ranges to be problematic in August of 2009, Sears followed the recommendation of the supplier and the Electrical Safety Authority to issue two recall notices (August, 2009 and October, 2010) regarding certain models of ranges. Sears continues to work with its supplier and the ESA as issues are identified by customers.

In continuing to help ensure safety, Sears Canada will perform a free diagnostic inspection of its customers’ smooth-top or coil element electric range by one of Sears Canada’s trained technicians for any customer that contacts Sears experiencing similar issues to those indicated in the August 2009 and October 2010 safety notices but whose range model and serial number are not included in these previous recalls, to verify whether the range is functioning properly. Sears has set up a dedicated phone line (1-866-691-9948) to address this matter and assist our customers with their concerns.

In recognition of the inconvenience caused by this matter, customers who have already received service from Sears on their range and whose repair was not covered under warranty or recall notice, will be refunded the charge of that service call.

Sears places a great importance on product safety and the Company invites its customers to contact Sears should they have any questions relating to this safety notice.

  7. I am glad to hear Sears has FINALLY taken a “wee” bit of action and responsibility in Canada but what about all the other appliances Sears has sold or cheated us with that are plain rotten, and in America too? I recently bought a Kenmore smoothtop range and just went to use the stove for the first time last night. The first button I pushed to turn on the timer was too much for it and the whole panel fell off into the stove. I didnt even get to use my stove or oven and it broke in the first 2 seconds! We pulled the stove out from the wall, removed the back metal plate and found all four screws with thier plastic fittings broken. It’s all cheap plastic inside. This is the Kenmore 790 stainless steel smoothtop. It is under warranty, but will still take a week or more to fix and will be replaced with more cheap plastic that is sure to break again. The Sears representative I talked to when I called the 800 # said “Well didnt you have them install and inspect it after delivery?” (we live 10 minutes away from Sears, picked it up and did not have it delivered so she tried to blame us for fault/error in transporting and installing it.) My husband called Kenmore directly and learned this problem is an issue that is occuring frequently and is on thier “watch list”. The watch list is a step that is just below a recall. To think Sears tried to push the guilt onto us for this problem is even more upsetting.
In addition to this, Our GE refrigerator from Sears broke down completely just after the warranty expired. The Sears Technician came to fix it and said the computer board ($160 part+ 100$ service call)has been known to go out frequently in my model and to expect to replace it again in two more years because they are not made to last. SEARS you are cheating your customers beyond all ethical belief! I also learned that my frige qualifies to be energy star only because the temperature settings are set to the wrong temperature in the factory! If you use a real thermometer you will see a difference and it will be up to 7 degrees warmer than the frige and freezer say it is. (Appauling!) Appliances that are made specific to Sears stores are obviously made to keep the Sears technicians in business! I am so disgusted with Sears after hearing these above stories including my own experiences that I am beginning to think Logs and a kettle over a fireplace may be more energy efficient, more cost effective AND SAFER!! What happened to appliances being reliable like they were over 20-30 years ago? Oldies but goodies withOUT computer chips were truly built to last so it CAN be done!

  8. Jack Langstaff says:

We have a Kenmore C790 – 648191 stove. It was in the house at the time of our purchase and was 1 1/2 years old. Unknown to us, we thought that we did not know how to use the stove correctly as there was no owners manual. Anyway once educated, we found out that the control pad worked intermittently on the number pad and also on the stove cooking selection pad. We called Sears and after spending $100.00, the repairman did nothing and told us that we might need a new control panel and that we should shut off the breaker for a while and see if it would reset. Well we’ve struggled now for 3 years with this hit and miss control pad and this stove is going to find a new home in the metal crusher!! Sears can drop dead with their service and products, it outright sucks! We will be buying from somewhere else.

  9. Phil Sanders says:

We have a Kenmore Glass top. Came with the house when we bought new in 2004. Just within the last couple of weeks the oven will beep and runs to maximum temp almost like it goes into cleaning mode. error message displays F1. Will not respond from the control panel and the only way to get it off is to flip the breaker. First time it seemed to reset. This last time even when the breaker was flipped back on the oven went to max temp. Even with the success in Canada not sure I want to risk my home and family with such a dangerous fire hazard device. How long before we hear something for us in the U.S.? Why would Sears even differentiate between the two countries?

  10. Sharon Taylor says:

I have a Frigidaire that is also not covered under the recall, but it is exhibiting the problems regarding the popping sound. It did it one day when the oven was on and I thought maybe a fuse or something blew, but then the next day it did it when I turned one of the burners on. It smoked some but we havent pulled it from the wall to see if there was damage. Does anyone know of the fix if this popping sound is occurring., Im getting kind of scared reading all of these posts.

  11. Marietta says:

My Kemore Model # 970-606023 bought in Aug.2009. It just happened this afternoon. The right top element was on with the swtich off, the element light was on too. I need to up-plug the power supply to stop the heating. HELP.

  12. My smooth top range exploded on tuesday May 17th twenty minutes after I turned on the oven to prehead. Flames came out the back panel. The explosion sounded like bb’s (as my daughter described it.) It was pretty scary. It blew a fuse in my fuse box. I called 911 as there was a considerable amount of smoke. I didn’t know if it was the oven or my house wiring. the fire dept determined that it was the oven. Im contacting the necessary people to get a refund or credit toward a better range.

  13. Well, here we are about 7 months later after replacing the switch on the right front burner of my Kenmore oven myself and tonight that same switch is not working all over again! The burner stayed hot after turning it off and would not turn off! Had to put on an old switch that I also replaced from the left front burner back in October of 2010 onto where the right front burner switch was for now. It is still useable, but did start having problems back in October also. When are they going to get this recall issue resolved in the United States. This is ridiculous! I bought the stove back in 2007 and should not be having problems like this! Sears-COME CLEAN AND JUST ADMIT YOUR KENMORE SMOOTH TOP STOVE NEEDS TO BE ON RECALL BEFORE SOMETHING SERIOUS HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Travis Osbourne says:

If anyone has a Frigidaire with a glass top and has had any of the burner’s come on by themselve’s email me at Travmg6465@aol.com and explain how you turned it off thank you

  15. As I was cooking dinner on my Kenmore Elite electric range (790-99123400), I heard a popping sound, and sparks, flames and smoke came up out of the back of the control panel. It was like a firecracker. Very scary. I was able to put it out with a fire extinguisher, but it kept on smoking and popping, so I flipped the breaker. Apparently the digital control board malfunctioned. I’m lucky the fire didn’t damage anything else. I won’t get it repaired, because it’s stupid to repair a fire hazard. I’m looking for a new non-Kenmore range now.

  16. jason thomas says:

I have a kenmore smoothtop that is not under the recall as it is not in sears $1000-$3000 dollar range, however mine has the same knobs and has all the symtoms of this problem. I wonder if it will be tomorrow that my house burns down…
    Sears can kiss my #$$%%^$#

  17. I have range 790-99129400 sn vf43819025. Turned stove on. The back/ control unit burst into flames.

  18. Tom Lowe says:

I have a Kenmore 790 glasstop stove in each unit of a duplex that were installed in 2007. One has the now well-known problem of intermittent switch failure with resulting infinite heating and fire hazard on the two large burners. Sound familiar? These cheaper stoves should have been recalled also and I am considering legal action against Sears for endangering my tenants.

No way will I spend $50 each for their worthless switches or $148 for a new circuit board. I have a backup self-cleaning analog heating coil stove, and that one will now be used.

Sears, Kenmore and Frigidaire are now history in my rental real estate business. Fired!

  19. My rental property has a Kenmore Model 790 961 22408 SN VF64050195. I don’t see it on the recall list. The stovetop comes on by itself at random times. I’m already loosing money on the rental – this couldn’t have happened at a worse time. Thank goodness everyone in the house is ok. I’m at davesport@tds.net if anyone wants to do a class action suite or knows of subsequent recalls for more models.

  20. BEWARE NON RECALLED FRIDGDAIRE SMOOTHTOP RANGE es300 MODEL FEFL68GMA ALMOST STARTED MY HOME ON FIRE. I had set the timed cook and left to go swimming but forgot my towel so 5 min. went back just in time to find my home filling with black electrical smoke that was coming from back of the oven. THIS WAS BOUGHT IN OCT. 2009 SO BARELY OUT OF WARRANTY. Fought thru the smoke and flipped main breaker which somehow stopped it from catching fire. A week later finally had the nerve to check again after cleaning inside and out to make sure some spill did not cause smoke BUT SURE ENOUGH AS SOON AS OVEN STARTED HEATING UP, BLACK SMOKE POURED OUT AGAIN FILLIN GMY HOUSE, TURNING MY WALLS BLACK. IF I DID NOT FORGET THE TOWEL MY HOME WOULD HAVE BURNT TO THE GROUND AND I HAVE BEEN USING TIMED COOK ALL LAST SUMMER, AND IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED AT ANY TIME. OH AND FORGOT TO MENTION, THE MICROWAVE THAT I BOUGHT SAME TIME AS THE STOVE, THE GLASS SHATTERED FOR NO REASON A WEEK EARLIER AND STILL FIGHTING WITH FRIDGIDAIRE REGARDING THE INJURIES I SUSTAINED FROM GLASS SHATTERING ALL OVER ME. DISHWASHER ALSO LESS THEN 2 YEAR OLD WENT OUT AND JUST WAITING FOR THE SIDE BY SIDE TO GO NEXT, ITS ALMOST HIT THE TWO YEAR MARK. THESE PEOPLE NEED SUED AND ANYONE WITH PROBLEMS WITH THERE FRIDGIDAIRE APPLIANCES PLEASE REPORT TO FED CONSUMER SAFETY COMMISSION. THEY REFUSE TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEM WITH MY MODEL EVEN THOUGH IT IS EXACT SAME STYLE AS THE ONE IN RECALL AND I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT MOISTURE OR WHATEVER CAUSING FIRES, MINE I BELIEVE SHORTED AFTER I ACCIDENTLY TURNED BROIL ON FOR A SECOND SO I THINK ITS IN BROILER WIRING THAT CAUSED THIS NIGHTMARE. NOW I HAVE NO WAY TO COOK AND NO MONEY TO REPLACE THESE JUNK APPLIANCES.. ANYONE GETS CLASS ACTION GOING AGAINST THESE LOWLIFES LET ME KNOW AT thewolfsden@cox.net

  21. terry swainston says:

i have called for 2 years, they keep saying its not on the list, well the others wernt either til someone called.model fefl79gca serial vf72015103,i will get a lawyer if i have to,this range does all the things wrong the others do,i dont want it fixed i want a gas stove.pls respond,im an old vet, half blind, living on military pension, pls have some compassion, thank you

  22. Hank White says:

    I have a smooth-top range #cges387as4 I bought it in 2003 at Leon’s
The Oven came on by it’s self and burned hot then the top started sparking an Ark then the oven turned off as well as all the electrical digital info. The top burners turn on but the front panel and Oven won’t turn on. I looked for a fuse panel but there is none. I don’t see were this is part of a recall but it should be.

  23. Hank White says:

I am a film maker and I have read all the negative info here on the stove I will be writing and producing a short mocumentry film on this stove and have all all these negative in it. Don’t want to fix the problem Frigidaire then I will at the end of the film blow the piece of junk up to make a point.

  24. I bought a smooth top range from Sears in 2007. It has exact same problem as all other models. It just turns on and off by itself and Sears says that we need to pay $120.00 for a tech to come and look at it and they said there is nothing else they could do for us. I am glad no one of my family got hurt due to this defective product that they sold us. My model # is 7909611409, if anyone of you has this model # call 1-800-638-2772 where if they get enough complaints they might put this product on recall as well. Meanwhile I hope no one gets hurt in the world because they do not want to take responsibility of manufacturing a defective product.

  25. I have the same problem as Brian on Aug 31st, 2011 at 7:46 am. I submitted a complaint.

  26. I have a Kenmore model # 79095922301 smooth top electric range made by Frigidaire.I was baking pork chops on 9/10/11 at 400 degrees and was in the living room watching tv.After around 1/2 hour i heard a pop and snap sound coming from the kitchen.I went to the kitchen to see smoke then flames coming from the controller on top of the range!I grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out then pulled the range away from the wall and ran down stairs and shut the breaker off! This thing could have burnt my house down!

  27. The Electrolux (home company) Frigidaire stove problems continue even after years of reports.

LGEF3043KFD Frigidaire flat top 36 inch stove bought at Lowe’s

Burners heat to random temperatures. Set to low and food boils dry in minutes.

Oven would not shut off Sept 16, 2011. Pulled stove away from wall, unplugged, had boys put it in the garage

Stove was purchased August 30, 2010.

Looking for a new wave of Frigidaire recalls.

    In the meantime . . .

If you are having safety issues with your Frigidaire range stove or other products, you can call the Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC at (800) 638-2772. You will need to provide your contact information including a phone number as well as the model and serial number and place of purchase with a purchase date.

  28. I am another one who’s Frigidaire Range caught fire. Same situation: dinner in the over, very loud crackle & pops, I turn around, and there are flames shooting out of the electrical pannel, resulting in damage to my home. I filed a complaint with Frigidaire, have been through the recall department, the risk management department, a claims adjuster, and they even sent a 3rd party company out to take my statement and pictures. Problem is now it’s been over a month with NO RANGE, and NOBODY will call me back, including the manager of the Claims Department at Electrolux (parent company) who is personally handling my case. I left a message that if I do not receive a return phone call within 24 hours, then I’m going to call the news station to expose the company. Guess what, still no return call. Some advice please… because my range was actually on recall, are they going to replace it? Or just ignore me from here until eternity?

  29. Garry Broughton says:

I have a Frigidaire model # FEFLMC55GCA smooth top electric range I bought in August of 2008.While using the right rear burner, the other 3 burners came on by themselves with the temps going out of control. The only way i could turn it off was to turn off the breaker. After reading about all of these problems I am not confident with the fix. It sounds to me that Frigidaire isnt sure about there fix because they do not post on what the fix Is. I probably will replace the stove.
WHY ISNT THIS A MANDATORY RECALL INSTEAD OF VOLUNTARY.

  30. So here I am feeling bad for everyone whose product was not on the recall list – but I was feeling lucky that mine was – as per the appliance.net website…until I called Sears this morning and was told my Kenmore Elite Smoothtop Electric Range model #790.99019 900 was not effected by the recall! Through our language barrier, “Blas” explained to me that my model needed to end in 101 not 900! Really? I am on the phone with CPSC hotline now. She double checked and no – the product is not covered. She said that if the compliance officer gets enough complaints he might add more models to the list. Unfortunately, not every victim is aware of this forum and not everyone that is will contact the CPSC. Repair or replace – that is the question. As mentioned before – it sure won’t be a Sears/Kenmore product.

  31. lidong zhu says:

Frigidaire model smooth top electric range: c970-440832

    Seriel nf54222982

left front element turn on/off by itself.

It was happened at 8 pm on Oct 1 ,2011, before we went out for shopping, I double check the stove, all the on/off pads show off, but the front left element was red, I asked my kid the answer was she turned it off, so I assume it was the residual heat.

When we got home 10:pm, the house was filled with smoke, fire alarm was aloud, and the contend left in the pot was brned to black. freaking out, open all the windows and turn on the fans. my cat was survive. flip the breaker, 1 more hour late still cam smell the smoke.

    No more Kenmore product

  32. I have 3rd degree BURNS!!!! from one of those Kenmore 790 model stoves!!! I was hospitalized for 3 days and have been out of work 4 weeks already due to the front burners turning on by themself….. There was oil on the STOVE that heated up without me knowing cause the stove was supposed to be off … I am so worried about these stoves killing someone because I almost went up completely in FLAMES

  33. I bought a Kenmore smooth top range, model # 790.96122408.I have the same problems like the folks above.Front burner coming on but is off.The front burner won’t shut off and the heat is at red hot.The time would come off at times. The oven is overheating that the top of the stove gets extremely hot as well,so much as to severe burns. When I bake moisture comes from the oven, escaping at the left top causing condensation from the moisture to pool on top of the range.Yesterday,I baked a bread and error F30 appeared and now the oven is shut and the light is on for closed oven. Can’t open the oven door.My husband had to shut the circuit breaker many times to avoid serious burns or fire.Sears and Frigidaire are both not accepting a defective stove because it’s not one of their recalled models.I had a tech come twice to fix the problem and just recently spent another $60. in parts that the Sears rep said we need to change.I called yesterday and today to both Sears and Frigidaire and everyone is giving me the other one to contact. Many hours spent wasted without any help but they all want to send a tech out for $129. plus parts. They can’t do anything is all they can say, although I told them these models starting with 790…. all have the same dangerous problems. The last supervisor at Sears(at 5:45p.m. today,10/11/11),his name is John ,told me that I should have taken out a service agreement, then he would have sent a tech out to fix it.Otherwise,I have to pay for them to fix it.I filed a complaint with the U.S. safety com. but from what I’ve read they won’t do anything unless so many complaints are filed for a particular model #.Moreover, they’re corp. friendly.Frigidaire and Sears should be responsible for all models beginning with 790 because that’s where most of the defects are with the Kenmore models starting with 790.I’d be willing to join in a class action suit. These corps. don’t care if your house burn to the ground or if anyone dies as result of a fire. It’s a small price they have to pay compared to if they have to recall all the stove.Paying for a person’s death is cheaper for them. It’s so sad but true.

  34. Since Sears will be ultimately responsible, who else?, at what point assuming arguendo someone dies, will this issue go from being a consumer issue to being a criminal issue? At a minimum I would think, negligent homicide. There is too much history for this to be a manslaughter charge against the CEO, COO or whatever the head of Sears is called. To the lady who was burned, my sympathies. You should be able to find a lawyer in your area to take this on a contingency basis. Your case truly is a slam dunk; especially, if you still have the stove somewhere. If you replace the stove, save the old one.

  35. I own a Kenmore Electric smooth top electric oven Model number #665.95794000. It is not included in this recall. We set the oven to 350 degrees to bake cookies. The top element of the stove never turned off, so the cookies started to burn. We took the cookies out, and turned the oven off. 10 minutes later, I noticed the inside of the oven was glowing red, so I looked, and the top element was still on. When I opened up the oven, a puff of black smoke came out of the oven. I tried to turn the oven on and off several times, but it did not turn off. I finally had to run downstairs and turn the breaker off. My incident seems very similar to many on this post.

  36. i have a kenmore 79097439801 oven stopped working a little over a year old. of course after warrenty up. sears wouldnt do anything about it. replaced element not it. then pulled it out and looked at back. half the senors and wires have been on fire and burnt my wall. i also bought a kenmore dishwasher the same day. that will not clean at all. sears came out and said must have been my water. every other dishwasher i had worked just fine. only replaced it cause getting whole new kitchen. what a mistake. also got a 46 in. samsung tv from sears. screen quit working 13 months after we got it. we got a maytag fride from them to. they wont do anything to help. every piece of stuff i got from sears in uniontown pa. is junk. ill will never buy from them again or any of my family. sears and kenmore suck.

  37. We bought our Kenmore smooth range drop-in, Serial Number: 790.45599902 in October 2011 and the oven has broken two months later! We used it for the first time tonight and it would not turn off. We had to turn the breaker off and now we can’t cook at home. It wouldn’t have even done us any good to get the extended warranty because it broke after TWO MONTHS! What the heck?! I’m filing a complaint with the CPSC because our model should be on the recall list as well as everybody else’s! I’ve read all of these horror stories and I’m not going to Sear’s anymore. Our household has been buying from them for 20 years, but not after this! I can’t believe that people have been reporting this problem for 2+ years and they are still selling these DANGEROUS appliances!

  38. Have a Kenmore Model# 665.95002102 that overheated with no control. Potential for serious damage, fortunately my wife was home and able to pull out the range and disconnect the power cord. This was reported to CPSC. From all these reported incidents, must be a common faulty design with no fail-safe. Sears needs to take responsibility for these products.

  39. So I had to order a new bake element for my Kenmore oven 79096002601 that’s not even 4 years old. According to what I read online, these are supposed to last 10-20 years? I went ahead and ordered my third infinite switch also. I has been bad for between 6-9 months now. It would only heat up to high, but not turn down in temperature. Ordered the stove element for $21 compared to $44 if I bought it at a local appliance store. Also, the infinite switch is around $10-$11 cheaper if you order it online also. I have probably replaced about $100 + in parts on this oven already. Saved a lot by not having sears come out and charge me $70 for labor everytime. I don’t think I will buying kenmore products anymore, seeing to how they just don’t have the quality they used to and the fire safety issues I have had with the burners on the stove going haywire because of the infinite switches!

  40. Didn’t know. The Frigidaire pro series smooth top model plef398dcc serial #vf45019912 was in the remodeled kitchen when I bought the house so no recall information reached me. Easter Sunday with dinner in the oven and the control panel burst into flames. Sounds like I’m not alone.

We have a Kenmore model from 2008/09 not included in the recall, but the left front burner turns on and off by itself, more lately. Usually when cooking or using the oven, so the vibration may be triggering something. I will be calling Sears and Consumer Protection to complain. Model 790-9600 2600 SN VF64037329.

  42. I bought a Kenmore glass top stove 790.95379802, purchased in 8/2010. The oven stayed hot the morning after I used it. I had a repairman inspect and he said it was working fine. He did smell a burnt odor at the control panel. he said maybe a relay was working erratically. but now i am afraid to use the stove.

  43. We have a 655:95812000 Kenmore smooth top model. I used to love it. I had been baking for almost 40 minutes with the oven working as expected, when smoke started coming out of the oven. The oven had gone from regular bake to high broil by itself, then the ‘red hot’ broiler elements would not shut off. I tried calling Kenmore customer service to find out what to do to shut off the broiler, but because we had purchased it used, they could only recommend getting maintenance done on the unit, no help for the immediate problem.
I called customer chat after the event and received no help there either, not even the offer to check to see if it was a recalled item. Now I don’t trust the unit and don’t want to leave the house without shutting off the breaker.

We have a Kenmore smoothtop electric range Modelnr: 790.96002601 / SN: VF70322611.
The rightfront burner sometimes comes on spontaneously without turning the controlknob. Also it does not turn off while turning the controlknob to off. The only way to turn it off is to unplug the range or hit the breaker.
(Funny thing is that while the rightburner stays hot, the “hot surface” indicator light turns off after a while.)

I called Sears, got transferred to Frigidaire who transferred me to Kenmore. Bottomline……neither of them were willing to take their responsibillity to satisfy a customer and repair the range for free while it appears to have the same fault as the recalled models.

Since we don’t want to unplug the stove or hit the breaker everytime we leave the house, I guess we are off now to buy a new stove. (not kenmore / frigidaire) ;-)

We bought a Kenmore Elite glass cook-top with digital touch controls about 6 years ago. A couple of times in that period we have had problems with elements not switching off properly (all the controls dead with one or two elements still on – had to turn it off at the breaker.) This past Saturday I came in the house after being out for a couple of hours to find that one element was on full-blast, none of the controls operational, and an over-powering, acrid ‘electrical fire’ smell permeating the whole house. The smell is clearly emanating from the cook-top. I switched it off at the breaker and I’m not using that cook-top again. I hate to think what would have happened if we had been out for much longer.
We are sure that the elements were off when we left the house, although the red H indicator was on on one element which had just been in use, not the element that was on when I came back in.
I don’t see any reference to Kenmore cook-tops in the recall information, but it is clearly a similar problem to that described above. I am very reluctant to get another Kenmore appliance after this experience.

  46. I have a 970-6784 smooth top kenmore product I bought less than 2 years ago. Last week I went to turn on the Bake function for my dinner and flames and smoke shot out from behind the circut board. This left smoke and burn marks on my wall. I unplugged the unit and then cooked on the cheap-o bbq (that’s reliable). I then plugged it back in and every thing seemed normal when the bake registered 350 degree c, until after 5 minutes my dinner was black from the excessive heat. If I had left my meal for the 20 min suggested I would have had a full on fire!
How come products that cost $1000 or more are becoming worse and worse….profit profit….outsourcing outsourcing……. Thanks Sears.

  47. My kenmore glasstop range, did the same thing as far as not turning off or down by the switch..Smoked up my house until my husband came and unplugged it..After trying to complain to numerous phone numbers given by numerous Sears customer ser. reps….the best I got was they will charge me to come service the stove….Now after reading all the complaints and stories some even after the “FIX”, I guess I too will be buying a new stove. This one is unsafe.

  48. Julie Schmitt says:

Large front right burner on ceramic cooktop sometimes fails to turn off when knob is turned off, causing blazing red high heat on and off repeatedly until we turn the knob off and on several times, or shut off the circuit breaker. It is always the same front right large burner, which is also the burner most often used. This is a cooktop, not a full stove with oven.

Frigidaire cooktop model FEC32S6ASF, manufactured Feb 2008, purchased from Sears same month, only used since 2010. It does not have a control panel, so Frigidaire said it must be the switch. It looks like from the above comments, that the infinite switch can go bad over and over again.

Waiting to hear back from my report to US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Anyone else have this model and this problem?

  49. Sean Ross says:

My smoothtop professional front right burner came on by itself this past weekend. It went to high and burned up a bottle of prescription drugs and some vitamins and smoke damages most of the house. I was in another part of the house and if it weren’t for a cat trying to hide under the bathtub it would have been way worse. If nobody was at home the house could have burned down. Fridgidare is sending replacement parts and a service order but I think I will get rid of it immediately. Definitely not worth the risk after hearing the other stories on this blog. Bought electric for safety, going back to gas.

  50. Stewart Boswell says:

Bought all new Series Pro Frigidaire appliances in 2006, the oven did exactly as mention earlier well cooking a bang then black smoke that covered the wall. The stove completely quit as the breaker went off, good thing. We have gotten rid of these suposedly high end pieces of garbage and bought all new samsung appliances. I want to be able to sleep nights and know my family is safe. These companies should not be getting away with this, someone is going to either severely get hurt or possibly killed by these pieces of garbage.
