  5. DOROTHY JACKSON says:

I have a Kenmore refrig side by side with same problems as the recall ones, but have gotten the run a round. My compressor has gotten so hot could have caused fire-capacitor strip went out. Now 3 wk. later it is out again. Any chance mine is on a recall list somewhere?
Model 596.52673200 Kenmore made by Amana.

  6. These models don’t appear to be part of the recall, but the best thing to do if you suspect you have an effected appliance, is to contact the manufacturer through their website or toll free number. That contact information is listed in the recall above and I will also provide it here:

Consumer Contact: For more information, contact Maytag toll-free at (866) 533-9817 anytime, or visit the firm’s Web site at http://www.repair.maytag.com

    I hope this helps.

  7. Bob Rhoades says:

    I have a 2001 or 2002 Kenmore
Elite which had a similar problem with the relay to the compressor. The switch burned and we had the Fire Dept. at the house. Could this be the same thing? The model is 106.50589001. Everything I can find shows the part for replacement has been changed to a differant part number. Your help to find out if this should be part of a recall is appreciated.

    Thank you!

  8. Brian Larabie says:

I have a KitchenAid Superba, Model KSRA25ILSS03. I had the same problem re the recalls and fire. The relay went on fire. It caused smoke all through the house. The relay and compressor was replaced. It cost me $395 and KitchenAid so far have refused to cover the cost. We were out of town at the time. Luckily my son was at home and turned off the power breaker to stop the fire. The refrigerator was manufactured in November 2003. The incident happend in March 2009. The unit was just over 5 years old.

  9. Molly G says:

It seems that the KitchenAid Superba models should be included in the recall. Model# KSC25INSS00 (KitchenAid Customer service says that is not a valid model number, but that is what the label says) I am experiencing the same problem with over heating, no fire yet, but I am watching it closely.

  10. Casey Kaucher says:

I also have a Kenmore Model number 106.53662300 mfg date 4-2003 with the same problems as listed above. The fire department came to the house, determined it was the refrig and stated if plugged back in it would cause a fire. What needs to be done to have a recall on this product before someone’s house does burn down?

  11. NightOwl says:

To all owners of Maytag-made refrigerators with a relay malfunction:
PLEASE contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at cpsc.gov or 1-800-638-2772. They are the Government agency that issues the recalls.
I have spoken to a representative there who confirmed that they want to hear from consumers who are not included in the recall, but have problem units. The recall can be expanded, but the agency needs to know that there is a problem.

  12. Richard Matos says:

I also have a kenmore side by side model number 106.53334300.Manufacture date 2004.The same problems in dec 08 smell burning rubber, and smoke Refrig stopped working.Repair man from sears came.He showed me the badly burned out relay along with burned insulation next to the relay.Relay was replaced along with the compressor.I Was charged around $260.00.I called maytag after viewing a one page ad in the local newspaper about a recall for amana, maytag, etc but no mention of kenmore.Maytag gave me the run around, and claimed that my refrig wasn’t recalled. This is bull. Will contact consumer product safety commission.

  13. m.konicek says:

My amana refrigerator get very hot had several repairs is this on reacall model Jcd2389geq serial 10092887zs

  14. NightOwl says:

Based on the above chart, your refrigerator is not part of the recall, but I suggest calling Amana/Maytag toll-free at (866) 533-9817 to confirm this.

If they confirm that your refrigerator is not part of the existing recall, you can then call the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at cpsc.gov or 1-800-638-2772. They are the Government agency that issues the recalls.

This recall can be expanded, but the agency needs to know there is a problem with more refrigerators.

  15. ryan celender says:

I have a kenmore side by side that currently is having the same problem with the compressor getting very hot, possible capacitor issue. Is there a recall? mod. 596.51672100 ser. 10088769AA

  16. Steve Tuzik says:

Please notify me about repairs for my Kenmore side by side refrigerator. The ice melts when the coil heats up to orange and you can hear the water dripping on it.

Is there a number I can call or is this a recall. I believe the latter from what I have read. I do not want to burn the house down and have to contact Kenmore if that is even possible.

  17. Ken Keith says:

What a disaster! Sears contacted me last week and stated this repair was needed. We wasted part of our day today waiting for the repairman. He did the work in about 15 minutes and stated we were all set. About 8 hours later when got home we found water on the floor (melted ice)and everything spoiled or melted in the refrigerator and freezer. Sears stated Maytag gave bad directions but hasnt stopped the service calls, Maytag states Sears was given the proper directions and never gave them to their repair staff. The compressor is shot and I am out $300 in food and still no refrigerator. Sears stated it “was not their problem and they would try and have a tech out in 3 days. I have small children so they claim they will be out tomorrow. I now have to wait until tomorrow to hopefully have it repaired. Sears states the compressor problem is “common” as a result of this repair so beware! I will NEVER buy anything at SEARS again. This is the fourth (and last)run around and problem they have caused me.

  18. Jamille says:

I have a Maytag side by side serial number 15781591AE, model number MSD2756GES do I need to call a technician? The strip that is in between the doors is too hot to touch.

  19. Dale Heath says:

I have a Maytag Model MSD2454GRQ , Serial No. 17015454AJ refrigerator and I am having problems with the unit as follows:
    (1) the panel between the freezer/cooling compartment gets Hot to the touch.
    (2) Ice maker does’nt despense Ice.
    (3) Water from the Freezer has melted and has leaked out into the kitchen Floor (ice maker does’nt make ice). (Water is coming from underneath the refrig
So Maytag needs to wake up their Repair Man—This unit is included in the Recall. Please Reply.
    Thanks,
    Dale Heath

  20. NightOwl says:

  21. For all of you that have a side by side with the center section panel getting hot – CLEAN THE COILS UNDER THE REFRIGERATOR!

There is a refrigerant line that runs between the doors right under the skin that is meant to get slightly warm in order to keep condensation from building up between the door seals. If you do not clean the coils under the refigerator, the system will overheat causing that section between the doors to get very hot to the touch. Use a vacuum and compressed air to get those coils clean every year (every 6 months if you have pets).

  22. Terry Richmond says:

We have had trouble with our refrigerator since the beginning it does overheat and it is in the recall. We have had a repairman out several times for repair. Beside our icemaker quitting several times, our chief complaint has been that our ice melts and we have a fast water leak that pours out of the refrigerator onto the floor. We open the door and it looks like an igloo inside. It used to be a every Saturday event to remove the icicles inside. Every time the repairman came we thought it was fixed. This past weekend we came home to a flooded kitchen. Our floor has warped as well as our oak French door. We have to shove our French door to open or close it. Will our past repair bills or any of this structural damage be covered?

  23. Terry Richmond says:

P.S. I have called to schedule the recall repair, but please have a representative call us to discuss this further.

  25. I bought a Maytag Wide by Side in 2003. it worked great until September 2009. We awoke at 2:30 am to the smoke detectors screaming. We discovered that the regridgerator was smoking/burning. I unplugged it, opened the windows to clear the smoke, moved the stuff to another unit, and went back to bed.
Later, I went online and found the correct replacements for the charred parts and replaced them. The relay assembly was burnt, the wire harness was burnt, the capacitor was charred. I installed the new parts and it worked fine, but only a few hours later I checked and found the compressor running incredibly hot. I tossed that idea into BING and found this recall info. I’m sure that either my fan isn’t turning (I never saw it move)or the compressor is shot (no unusual noise) from the previous heat damage.
Anyway, the repairman is scheduled courtesy of the Maytag recall.
This could have been much worse. I wish this was a much larger announced recall.

  26. A own a Kitchenaid and had the same problem with the relay starting to burn. Thankfully I was walking by the refrigerator when the smoke started pouring out from behind. Because of all the reading about recalls, I called Kitchenaid and explained ever though I didn’t have a recalled refrigerator, I had the same problem. They transfered my to the Magtag safety department. I explained the problem and they are replacing the relay and compressor (if it’s damaged also). They took all the info about the what I experienced and make/model of the refrigerator. I was told this will be used to determine if the recall should be expanded. The repair company will be able see if the part is part of the Maytag recall, but even if it is not, my refrigerator is being fixed at no charge to me.

I would say to anyone having similar issues, call the manufacture. It really cannot hurt.

  27. Cleo Carey says:

I receied a recall letter from Maytag on Friday, October 16th, 2009 and called immediately as instructed. I spoke to Dasaun (SP?)and he arranged for a service company (McCain Mechanical SP?) to come to our home today, October 18th, 2009 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. We were home all day and it is now 5:35 p.m. and we are still waiting. If I had a phone number for the service I would certainly have called them.

  28. I just bought a Maytag Wide by Side at an auction…and I’m freakin out now! I thought I got a hell of a buy on this fridge?! Can I call as a 2nd owner if the serial numbers match the recalled unit? (I”m at work at the moment)

    Thanks,

    Tina

  30. Heard about this recall a while ago and determined our refrigerator (purchased at Home Depot 6 or so years ago) was affected. Set up a repair/service call thru the Maytag website at that time, and they were a no-show! Contacted Maytag and they said to set up another repair appointment. This unit stopped crushing ice long ago, the water/ice release buttons sometimes stick and do not deactivate, the freezer has started leaking water which freezes on the bottom, and the outside of the door has started rusting from water overflows from the sticking release button. Maytag partially-subsidized the purchase of this refrigerator due to recurring cooling failures of a prior-purchased Jenn-air (made by Maytag) refrigerator (we lost all of our food 3X in that one).

Needless to say, this 6-year old refrigerator is soon to be sent to the metal recycler, and for my remaining 40 years on this earth (if I’m lucky), I’ll never purchase a Maytag product again, and advise others not to do so as well.

Note that not all Kenmore appliances are made by Maytag – I have my eye on a Kenmore unit made by Whirlpool.

  31. Julia Hein says:

MY Kenmore side by side frigera2001-10 mod:106.51222100 also had the relay switch to the compresser get so hot it melted.

I recently recieved a call on my cell phone alerting me to this recall. I would like someone to come out and do any necessary repairs to preclude any fire hazards that may be there. I purchased this refrigerator at a Sears Outlet Store in Orlando, Fl. Their phone number is 407-677-3472(not sure if still in service) and they may still have records pertaining to this purchase.
Please contact me immediately regarding this issue.

    Thank you,

  39. Andy Palmarozza says:

Count me in to the mix with a Kenmore side by side refrigerator.
    model#: 106.52582202, Serial # SM4247234 manufactured 10/2002.

The start relay burned up yesterday, in the same fashion as those in the Maytag recall. Luckily I was home when the smoke detectors went off.

I filed a notice with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, on their website, as I noticed that Kenmore is not included in the Recall. Based on the shear number of complaints on various websites, the same problem seems to widely exist with the Kenmore model 106.xxxxxxxx. Is this refrigerator possibly made by Maytag?

  40. Today my 6-year old son smelled smoke downstairs while I was working upstairs. After looking for the source of the smell for over 30 minutes, we saw black smoke under the refrigerator. It turned out that the relay to the compressor was on fire! I was lucky to be home, otherwise who knows what could of happened. Note that the smoke was only visible when the compressor was cycling. The unit is a KITCHEN AID Model – KSRG22FKSS01, Serial # SL3457962 built in 08-01. This unit is not listed on the recall list, but am sure it has the same compenents used on the models recalled! Please advise….

  41. Fire in my KitchenAid Side by Side refrigerator.

I had the same thing happen to mine. My wife went to work and said it was working fine. Not more than 40 minutes later when I got out of the shower my kitchen was filled with smoke and the smell of an electrical fire. I ran down stairs and saw the smoke coming from the refrigerator. For any of you that have not smelt electric fires they really smell bad. I pulled the refrigerator from the wall and unplugged it. I continued to melt and smoke for several minutes. It got so hot that it melted the metal electrical contacts on the compressor. My kitchen still stinks days later. I took the advice of the person above that said they contacted the company. I made a friendly call to the customer service rep. She told me there was no recall but she could help me find a service center if I wanted to get someone out to repair it. I kindly said no thank you. But you could give me the number of consumer safety so I can report this fire to them as I think the public should know about this. She then replied nicely and said let me connect you to our safety department. From there I spoke to a nice women that arranged to fix it free.

Be sure to always contact the manufacture first. As the other KitchenAid owner discovered if you have something fixed without going through the company you will be stuck with a big bill. I dont blame them as there is no way for them to see the problem if the problem has already been repaired.

I have pictures. Not sure how to or if you can post them.

  42. http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac178/duckspanked/DSC_0010.jpg http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac178/duckspanked/DSC_0002.jpg http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac178/duckspanked/DSC_0001.jpg

Above are some links to pictures. I caught this most likely only a minute after it started. Who knows what would have happened if I was at work. The breaker did not trip and the electrical continued to be supplied to the refrigerator. Art work from my daughter had fallen below the refrigerator and would have definitely fueled the fire.

  46. Tanya Cole says:

I have a kenmore side by side model# 25359687993 and recently the shell in the freezer melted and cracked at the hole where the air flows to the refrigerator part. The whole refrigerator has a burnt smell and also makes the ice taste bad. What do I need to do.

  47. We have seen about 5 cases of that. It’s amazing how a little burnt plastic box can smell.

  48. Dorothy Gierlach says:

Came home 2-6-10 dropped off some groceries and went to do some more shopping at another grocery store. Husband calls me and said you need to get home immediately because everything in the frigerator is covered in black soot! The smell of burnt plastic reeked thru the whole house. The drawers were melted to the back wall! We immediately unplugged and removed the stinky food outside. The smell was the worst I have ever smelt! Sears came out that Monday and said that was the 1st time in 25years of service that he had ever seen anything like it. So I called Maytag. They want to replace my frige with a model that is worth $300 less then what I originally paid for and also 1 cubic foot smaller OR take a prorated dollar amount $500 less then what I spent! HELP! WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  49. We have the Maytag side by side model MZD2766GES which burned this past weekend because of the relay switch. Fire department came because of all the smoke because we couldn’t tell where it was coming from. It’s scary because one usually trusts a refrigerator not to burn up on its own like that.

  50. connie santos says:

i have a double door maytag like the one pictured on this page i have replaced the relay switch once already/prior to the recall/last night there was an electrical smell emitting from the icemaker section onn the back of the fridge. all of a sudden all this water comes gushing out from the frige turned the water off to the icemaker the smell continued is this problem due to the recall please advice as i have wuite a bit of damage going on her
